If you’re an upper KS2 teacher, then you’ll know that Alfred Noyes’ classic poem is perfect for the Narrative Poetry unit on the Year 5 and 6 English Curriculum.
This epic and equally tragic poem is simply too powerful to miss, and all students, regardless of reading ability and individual learning needs should experience it.
Written in modern language, this story allows students to understand the basic plot of The Highwayman by giving them an initial insight into the characters and setting of the poem. Students can then build upon this in their studies of the original version.
Afterwards, use The Soldier (featured below) to prompt writing tasks. Rather than focusing on alternative endings, The Soldier looks at how students can add new depth to the poem by exploring the plot through different perspectives.
You’ll find the story videos for The Highwayman and The Soldier below. The full text pack and complete unit bundle are also available on the Shop page.
Happy teaching everyone!
