Last year at the British School Manila, the Head of Primary conducted a student survey about imagination. He asked one question: "How does our imagination change over time?"
The majority of the participating students recognised a decline in their imagination from their Primary to Senior years, most attributing this to reality, responsibility and even peer or societal pressure to live "in the real world."
The truth is, our imagination and our ability to dream never goes away- we simply prioritise other experiences as we get older- but that creative side of us is still there, in everyone, waiting to be reignited. As educators, it's our responsibility to keep the fire alive- to open the door to the unknown, to kindle the imagination and to awaken the dreamer in ever child. Creative writing is just one of the ways we can do this.
Creative Writing Workshop, Course Outline
This workshop is 4 hours in duration. This can be split across two days or ran as one morning or afternoon INSET if your school timetable allows.
Structure and Set Up
Part One (1.5 hours- presentation and training)
- How to use visual stimuli to prompt imagination;
- How to use visualisation strategies to provoke ideas;
- How to practise writing skills using pattern and verse;
- How to model writing effectively as a whole class and in small groups;
- How to assess understanding in writing;
- How to use spacing and retrieval to ensure progress in writing.
Part Two (2.5 hours- presentation and training)
Part two of this course involves planning with teaching teams. Depending on cohort sizes, I'll support year groups in planning their next English unit with a creative writing focus. Together, we'll implement spacing and retrieval, write and prepare models for upcoming classes and consider next steps. This is the part in the course where we can personalise the content to suit your students.
*This workshop is available face-to-face or online. For face-to-face workshops, additional travel costs may be added depending on the location of your school.*
